Inaugural Lecture: Professor Barry Sharp - From Laboratory to Clinic - Analytical Chemistry in Action - 8/February/2012 at 5.00pm

On 8/February/2012 at 5.00pm. Analytical Chemistry, or Analytical Science as it's known in the broader scientific community, is concerned with chemical measurements. These measurements are used in everything from simple colour tests, such as litmus paper acidity tests, to the use of multi-million pound instruments developed by multidisciplinary collaborations. Analytical chemistry plays a vital role in all aspects of modern life, in trade, industry, consumer protection, environmental research, biology and medicine, and ensures that "it does what it says on the tin". In this lecture, Professor Sharp will describe some of his work on developing analytical techniques based on laser sampling and mass spectrometry and their applications in cancer research, transplant surgery and ophthalmology.

Inaugural Lecture: Professor Alistair Milne - Risk Appetite and Risk Aggregation: Do banks understand what they are doing? - 29/February/2012 at 5.00pm

On 29/February/2012 at 5.00pm. The recent financial crisis raises fundamental questions about risk taking by banks. Financial economics offers some answers. Standard financial economics identifies two aspects of risk appetite (the willingness of banks to take on risk). One is required shareholder return. This can be quantified using the approach known as 'asset pricing'. The other is protection against financial stress. This can be quantified by models of extreme loss (of which the best known is Value-at-Risk or VaR). Distinguishing these two aspects of risk is of practical value. It helps banks avoid exposure to extreme events, think consistently about aggregation of risk, and better cope with current regulatory requirements to hold higher levels of capital (shareholder funds) as a buffer against loss. Standard analysis leaves one major issue unresolved. Should banks be aggressive (seeking high returns on capital; but experiencing substantial occasional losses) or patient (accepting lower returns on capital, but avoiding episodes of financial stress)? In this lecture Professor Milne argues that there is no 'one-size-fits-all' solution. This choice should take account of the 'patience/ aggression' decisions of other firms and the resulting risks to the entire financial system.

Public Lecture: Are human activities causing climate change and how damaging will the impacts be? - 14/March/2012 at 5.15pm - 6.15pm

On 14/March/2012 at 5.15pm - 6.15pm. Sir Nevill Mott Lecture From the burning of fossil fuels, coal, oil and gas, over 30 billion tonnes a year of carbon dioxide are emitted into the atmosphere. This is increasing the 'greenhouse effect' a scientific principle known for over 200 years, resulting in increased average temperature at the earth's surface. Intense scientific study of all parts of the climate system over the past 30 years has provided strong evidence of a resulting rate of change of climate greater than for many thousands of years bringing serious impacts on human communities and ecosystems. Many co-benefits will accrue from actions taken to reverse the current trends. The need for urgency is inescapable. John Houghton CBE, FRS was born in 1931 in Dyserth, Clwyd, educated at Rhyl Grammar School and Jesus College, Oxford. After a short period at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, he returned to Oxford in 1958 as Lecturer, Reader (1962) and Professor (1976) of Atmospheric Physics, where he became involved in novel instrumentation for observing the Earth’s atmosphere from space. In 1983, he moved to become Director General (later Chief Executive) of the Meteorological Office. In 1988, on the formation of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), he was appointed chairman of its Scientific Assessment – a position he held until 2002. After retiring from the Met Office in 1991, he became chairman of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution (1992-8) and a Trustee of the Shell Foundation (2000-10). He is currently President of the John Ray Initiative. His many awards include the Japan Prize (2006), Albert Einstein Award of the World Cultural Council (2009), International Meteorological Organisation Prize (1998), gold medals from the Royal Astronomical Society and the Royal Meteorological Society, honorary doctorates from 13 Universities including Oxford, Wales and Dalhousie, Canada and a share in the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the IPCC in 2008. His books include The Physics of Atmospheres (3rd edition 2003), Global Warming: the Complete Briefing(4th edition 2009), and The search for God: can science help. This prestigious seventeenth Sir Nevill Mott Lecture will be hosted by the Department of Physics, Loughborough University. A free public lecture. All welcome, although an understanding of physics principles up to ‘A’ level physics is recommended. No booking or tickets required.

Inaugural Lecture: Professor Elizabeth Stokoe - The Systematics of Social Interaction - 21/March/2012 at 5.00pm

On 21/March/2012 at 5.00pm. Everything we do in our daily lives is accomplished through social interaction: in the initiation, maintenance and negotiation of our personal and public relationships; in domestic and institutional settings. Contrary to the presumed 'messiness' of talk, researchers have shown that social interaction is highly organised in systematic ways. Actions like questions, offers, assessments, or compliments are organised in ways that have important implications for understanding everything from complaining about a neighbour and assessing a classroom task, to saying no to offers of help and flirting with a potential new partner. In this lecture, Professor Stokoe will present findings about the systematics of social interaction from her own work, drawing on audio and video-recordings from settings including student tutorials, romantic dating, police interrogations, and neighbour dispute mediation. She will show how she has developed these findings into practical applications in the world of communication skills training. Finally, she will argue that applications grounded in social interactional work can address 'the impact agenda' in higher education without compromising epistemic and academic integrity.

On 18/April/2012 at 5.00pm. We take for granted the idea that chairs are somewhere to sit, however there is much more to them than you may think. For example, chairs are designed for institutional use, for domestic use, for travel, for ceremonial occasions and they also offer a form for artistic expression. Many designers are fascinated by chairs. Architects suggest that the chair is small-scale architecture; industrial designers consider the possibilities of manufacture, modern materials and technologies, whilst curators of museums and galleries collect chairs as examples of changing cultural expression. Beyond this, the chair, as a prime example of both popular and elite material culture, offers us a number of insights into how we live with and use chairs. In this lecture Professor Clive Edwards will explore our relationship with the chair and consider themes related to authority, identity and distinction, discipline and domination, and of course comfort and relaxation. Finally, Professor Edwards will consider how artists have used chair as a means of expression, comment and observation when the chair is no longer an artefact but an artwork.

Inaugural Lecture: Prof. Huaizhong Zhao - Stochastic (Partial) Differential Equations and Stochastic Dynamical Systems - 30/May/2012 at 5.00pm

On 30/May/2012 at 5.00pm. Uncertainty and randomness occurs naturally in many real world problems. Probability theory provides mathematical tools to study and to model them. Random processes were noted by Brown, Bachelier and Einstein et al to describe random movements in various contexts such as, particle movement in a liquid, and economics. On the other hand, many physical systems are nonlinear in nature. Classical probability theory and canonical stochastic processes are basically linear. To understand random and nonlinear phenomena, one needs to study stochastic differential equations and stochastic partial differential equations. Mathematicians developed many new mathematics to understand random phenomena. Stochastic analysis began with its ground-breaking work in the study of stochastic integrals, together with some pioneering work of Kolmogorov, Markov and Wiener on probability theory, Markov process and rigorous mathematical construction of Brownian motion. It has been profoundly developed as a vital fundamental research area in mathematics in recent decades. It has been discovered to have intrinsic connections with many areas of mathematics, and vast applications in physics, engineering, finance, biology etc. The theory of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) and stochastic partial differential equations (SPDE) is a fascinating area of research. The theory of existence and uniqueness is pretty much developed after work of many mathematicians. With these results, it is natural to regard SDEs and SPDEs as random dynamical systems. In fact, it is not trivial to prove that SDEs or SPDEs can generate a random dynamical system. To understand random phenomena, we study the long-term behaviour and invariant set of stochastic dynamical systems. In this inaugural lecture, Professor Huaizhong Zhao will introduce the stochastic dynamical system generated by SDEs and SPDEs and discuss recent developments especially invariant manifolds, stationary solutions, random periodic solutions. Professor Zhao will also talk about probabilistic/analysis tools which have developed in recent years.

Inaugural Lecture: Prof. Shahin Rahimifard - How can we 'manufacture' a sustainable future for 9 billion people? - 24/October/2012 at 5.00pm

On 24/October/2012 at 5.00pm. It is widely agreed that current international efforts in planning for a globally sustainable future are insufficient. For example, there are significant concerns over the emission of greenhouse gases associated with energy generation, and yet it is predicted that the energy demands will be 45% higher within the next twenty years. This clearly highlights a need for a paradigm shift in the way we use and preserve our energy and other resources, in particular in the field of manufacturing where the effects of resource depletion, climate change and population growth will have a severe impact on the design of future products and their production methods. In this lecture, Professor Shahin Rahimifard will be using a target year of 2050 to describe four possible scenarios for the future of manufacturing industry. Professor Rahimifard will consider the impact of these scenarios on five key issues influencing manufacturing businesses - namely resources, products, production, labour and market. He will then explore possible solutions for one of the greatest challenges facing the global society, i.e. How can we manufacture a sustainable future for 9 billion people in 2050?

On 14/November/2012 at 5.00pm. Computer models provide simplified representations of the real world which are useful for understanding and predicting the future; but how simple should they be? Models are widely used to, for example, forecasting weather, predicting climate change and projecting economic trends. In developing such models there is a tension between obtaining approximate results quickly from a simple model and making extended efforts to generate models with a high level of fidelity. In this lecture we discuss why simple models are generally better. In doing so we shall demonstrate some simulation models that have been applied by business and the public sector, showing how they were used and the benefits that were obtained. Although set in a business context, the lessons have much wider applicability for the use of models in other fields.

Inaugural Lecture: Prof. Ray Dawson - Being Right is Not Good Enough - Why knowledge management initiatives fail - 5/December/2012 at 5.00pm

On 5/December/2012 at 5.00pm. Knowledge Management is of growing interest in business and industry today, and many organisations are looking to use knowledge management techniques. However, most knowledge management initiatives fail to measure up to expectations and many fail altogether. What is going wrong? Is this just a passing fad or can knowledge management be used to make worthwhile improvements to an organisation's way of working? In this lecture Professor Ray Dawson first examines what knowledge is and what makes the management of knowledge difficult. Professor Dawson concludes that organisations are right to want to embrace knowledge management, but being right is not good enough to ensure the success of any knowledge management initiative. There are many examples of knowledge management systems that have floundered or failed and some that have been successful. Is it not possible, therefore, to use this knowledge to learn from these experiences to improve the success rate? Professor Dawson describes a number of case studies of knowledge management initiatives and from these Professor Dawson derives a 12-step plan for successful knowledge management implementation.
